On the Fahrenheit versus Celsius: Celsius measures temperature relative to WATER. Hence 0 being the freezing point and 100 being boiling. Fahrenheit measures temperature relative to what is comfortable to humans. 0 is cold as fuck and 100 makes you sweat a whole lot. Kelvin just measures the rate that atoms move around, if I'm not mistaken.

i mean these are all easily google-able. like, 'where is the midwest.' 'what franchises are common in x state.' 'demographic data for x county.' 'why fahrenheit.'

yeah i alrdy knew that stuff from just life in general i guess but i just hate not getting the humour?? theres so many references i have to look up all the time and its really hard to banter about american-centric things bc i just dont have that background and cant pull out widespread jokes/relateable experiences from thin air. its hard to even recognise jokes sometimes! i feel so dumb :c

Well, yeah. Of course you can research. That's what I do all the time, but there's a difference betwen getting something and getting something, y'know? What davedudie said, essentially. You can spend an hour explaining the farenheit system to me, or AM/PM, and while I might understand how to read it and why it might be used, it still won't come naturally to me. I could sit here and explain the swedish tradition of watching the same old, badly dubbed, low quality Disney special with chopped up Mickey & friends shorts and clips from Robin Hood every christmas, explain why it came to be, it's cultural significance, etc., but it still wouldn't be the same as talking about it with someone who grew up with it. In the same vein, part of the annoyance is that I have to research things that will come natural to my partner. I don't want to pick up google every time someone talks about length! It's annoying! That's why I'm here whining about it! It'd be nice if, every so often, the default wouldn't be America, but it's just hard finding someone who's interested in researching all these cultural customs and traditions of a country that's in large pretty insignificant. I'm obviously going to know more about the US than they'll know about Sweden, by mere fact of US for a long time being a supernation and cultural capital of the western world. With that said, at least I'm european. Being from sub-saharan africa, or east asia (or even east europe) must suck even worse in this context.
