How do you approach playing characters that are unfamiliar to you or that you want to take a crack at roleplaying? Do you study up obsessively over pesterlogs? Do you go for a few rounds on MSPARP to get a feel for script first? Do you read up on guides or ask for tips from more seasoned roleplayers of your target character? Or maybe you just jump right in, wing it, and hope for the best! Whatever your methods, share them here, and maybe stories of how you first began roleplaying your main/best character, if you have one!

ah i main jade (because ive been playing jade for like. what four years? to the point where ive kinda claimed her name due to a long story) and i kinda just. idk i think honing your character is like slowly carving a piece of wood. you have to be careful with your characterization, at least till you get to the finish product. there really is no finished product with rping characters, especially not your own, but you do get to a point where youve settled on a portrayal of everything but the little details. i think how i got to my characterization of jade is im a very perspective person, and i analyse everything. everything. not as much as tumblr does over dave, but i do take a good look and try to find the reason behind the actions in canon. so after rereading hs a couple times, ive kinda harnessed my Ultimate Form Energy, and now i play a pretty mean jade.
but im also starting to get into alpha dave, and how ive done that is ive looked at other people's portrayal and interpretation, and ive picked what i agree with and what i've noticed from beta dave, and kinda harnessed that and threw some maturity onto there (just a tad) and i kinda am starting that carving!
i do a lot of growing through rps, and i do a lot of learning about the character by reading (surprisingly) fanfics, because with the really good ones, (youll know what they are) you can get a view for how other people handle the reins, and then go from there.
dont be afraid to ask for help, new rpers!!! if you know someone who rps a character youd like to try, ask them for tips!!! its always good to get others feedback. but remember, at the end of the night, its YOUR portrayal, and YOU have to be the one who goes and does the research, who has the seven tabs of karkat information open in an intense rp, who has to enjoy it. make it personal!!!

Since I started rping Dave only a few months ago, I can say I.... Kinda winged it tbqh. Sure, I was rereading Homestuck at the time, so I paid extra attention to all his logs and stuff, made sure to never skip a single one of his lines!! That helped a lot. Buttttttttttt to start rping him I just. Wrote a prompt and hoped for the best. And I was lucky!! Because I found great partners and they told me I make a really good Dave. That's always so flattering honestly!
