I'm the first to lay down the law of trying to be polite when I answer others, or when people answer my prompts, but the biggest thing that grinds my gears is when people answer a prompt with just a greeting.
It usually results with 'Hello!' or 'Hey!' which, while is a nice introduction to your first reply OOC, should not be your only reply OOC. Leading into an OOC conversation shouldn't be an awkward dance around what both of you are there for: to roleplay.
So why is it, when someone connects to my prompts lately, all I get is 'hello!' for three hours until I wake up and actually answer hello back?
Don't do this. Be straight and to the point. Don't start off an OOC conversation about how someone's day has been-- chances are neither of us actually care about how each other is doing, we're here to discuss something and we can become friends once we're actually accomplishing something like plot. Nothing makes me cringe more when someone connects to my prompt and all I see is a one word greeting. Try to start off with something like 'hello! I like this prompt, is x character okay? Are you looking for x? Would you like to try x plot twist on this, or I'd like to ask a few questions?" Any of these are more acceptable than just 'hello how are you'.

I tend to leave most of my prompts open with the exception of 'no john/etc.' I tend to leave most of my prompts open to offers, but asking about a character at least lets me know who they're going to be playing so I don't get random green text #2. I also like a little fore-plotting so tossing out a few ideas ahead of time is the bees knees to me.

I feel that a "hello" and going through the song and dance of obligatory conversation fluff is preferable to a partner that makes you wait for a response without even having the option of getting a feel for their personality before the roleplay starts off proper. Usually if I get a lone greeting, steering it back on topic with a, "Hello yourself, I take it you're interested in my prompt. Is there anything you'd like to discuss?" works well in breaking the ice and getting them on task.

i'm pretty guilty of just saying "hey" but usually its because um...yeah i suck at starting convos, haha. but you know, i say "hey" and i stay online unlike some people (COUGH). and then when people answer my prompt, i usually do the whole "hey thanks for connecting!!" before we get to discussion and stuff.
