I love putting any canon character on my prompts bc obscure and underappreciated characters are my jam. I love being reminded that PM could totally kick my ass and what a wonderful character Jane is, but for some reason all I get are boring Daves, obvious self-insert Johns, and generally ooc karkats.
Dont get me wrong, I've gotten some very enjoyable responses from those characters and I've seen some amazing portrayals but ANY character, man!! There are so many other possibilities, especially considering theyre not really good at Dave or John or Karkat in the first place, anyways. Branch out, explore, live a little! You might find a character that clicks.
The more Sin Children(tm) you can get under your belt the more power you get when you score a great partner. Plus it's really fun trying other characters!

I normally stick to Sollux or Dualscar and don't branch out that much because when I try my hand at someone else I end up getting chastised. It's all apart of the learning progress but I wish there was more constructive criticism in this community and help for newer rpers rather than the way it is now.

honest to god i stick to pm for people who appreciate her as a character but let me tell u when the phrase 'Any Canon Character' is used in a prompt and you dont go through fifteen ooc messages of pleasantries / textual butt kissing (in my experience- dont even get me started on discussion of plot / etc because thats a whole other animal) the likelyhood of getting a fat load of instadc after writing out a response that fits within requirements goes up tenfold
theres probably more people out there that thought it'd be safer to go with a 'generally well liked and (supposedly) easy to characterize properly' john / karkat / dave than someone more out there like pm / jane ? which is super dumb but honestly i was in that boat when i first started rping pm and wound up picking up dave as a second character -- it takes a lot out of a person to shoulder through all of the conditional 'ok i said any canon character but...' nonsense i've had to see in my experience which really sucks tbh
i think what im trying to say is that theres like... for people who actually play relatively unpopular characters on a regular basis its pretty hard to tell if a persons actually serious about things being *any* canon character or not? and therefore tend to seek out characters that specifically name their character of choice as desired for fear of wasting time/energy on a chat thats going to go nowhere fast-- which leaves people who play john / dave / karkat as mains (poorly or otherwise) to pick up all of the Big Anycanon Prompts because theyre less likely to get denied
idk if this makes sense its also almost 3am where im at but ?? yeah this is... pretty much my reasoning for almost never taking prompts aha i hope it helps a little

I run into this exact same problem with my prompts; when I mention any canon character (and I do mean it, as Fluffy can attest! Love some carapaces hanging out with Dave or Dirk), all I get are the same popular choices, which gets so, so stale after a while. Have a Signless bond with Dad Egbert, or Alpha Bro show Tavros the ropes of being in show business, or even, like... Lusus roleplayers! That would be neat!!

flufflebutts I totally get what you mean! And I think that's a great point. There seems to be no simple solution to this problem except for trying to really specify you mean any, which sucks :C I congratulate everyone who's able to put up with all that, I know I never could
